South Tampa Chamber Supports Hillsborough County Community Investment Tax
The South Tampa Chamber endorses the Hillsborough County Community Investment Tax, which will be on the ballot this November 2024. After thorough consideration and engagement with our members, we believe that this initiative is crucial for the continued growth and prosperity of our community.
The Community Investment Tax (CIT) is a half-percent sales tax that was approved by Hillsborough County voters in September 1996 for a period of 30 years. It expires November 30, 2026. The November 2024 referendum will include a 15-year renewal of the CIT. The CIT is a half penny sales tax, expiring at the end of its 30 year term in 2026. The CIT renewal is set for 15 years. This renewal is not an increase in sales tax, and as a tourist destination, visitors fund a significant portion of the sales tax.
The funds will be distributed by population to Hillsborough County and the Cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City. The projects supported by the renewal have already been identified. Approximately 50% is slated for critical transportation needs. By supporting the CIT, we are investing in the long-term success and prosperity of our region.
The CIT is a critical measure designed to fund a range of projects that will benefit all residents and businesses in Hillsborough County. These include improvements to our transportation infrastructure, enhancements to public safety, upgrades to educational facilities, and other vital community services.
The South Tampa Chamber is committed to fostering a thriving business environment, and we understand that a strong community foundation is key to that success. The CIT will provide the necessary resources to ensure Hillsborough County remains a desirable place to live, work, and do business.
We urge all South Tampa residents and businesses to learn more about the Hillsborough County Community Investment Tax and to join us in voting for a brighter future this November. The South Tampa Chamber will host an informational session about the CIT on October 9.
The South Tampa Chamber supports the Community Investment Tax and encourages our members, colleagues, and neighbors to vote YES as it will continue investment in our future. Together, we can build a stronger Hillsborough County!
