STCOC Education Update – August 2022

Please take a moment to read through the below message as it contains information for some upcoming opportunities for you to connect with our local HCPS including the return of CEOs in Schools and the Great American Teach In.
We are disappointed in the outcome of the Hillsborough Schools millage referendum; however, we would like to thank the more than 110,000 voters who supported the initiative by participating in this week’s primary election. Despite efforts by many to educate our community on the urgent need for additional funding, the measure fell short of passing—by just 619 votes.
In happier news, we are thrilled to see work begin on the new Manhattan Magnet PK-8 here in South Tampa! This new magnet school will replace the existing Manhattan Center offices at 4210 W. Bay Villa Ave. in Tampa. The school is scheduled to open in August 2024.
We have decided to suspend our monthly Education Committee meetings for the remainder of this year due to low attendance. Our Strategic Planning Committee, Advocacy & Policy Task Force and Chamber staff are working together to reimagine how we can strengthen and grow this program and look forward to gathering again in the new year. In the meantime, we hope to see you at one of the below upcoming Chamber events.
CEOs in Schools – November 4 | Registration opens on September 7th
On November 4, 2022, more than 150 Tampa Bay area CEOs will volunteer an entire day at Hillsborough County public elementary schools. CEOs will see, hear and do the things that our public school educators and students experience every day, and gain a new perspective on the role of schools in preparing students for success in the future workforce. https://www.1dayofchange.com/ceosinschools/
Great American Teach In – November 17 | RSVP Here
The South Tampa Chamber invites you to participate in the 2022 Great American Teach In! Volunteers are given the opportunity to share with the students about your career, your experiences and community involvement. Please complete the registration link to help us best partner you with a South Tampa area school.
